News of Chinese actress Li Bingbing replacing Zhang Ziyi in the movie Snow Flower and the Secret Fan actually came quite some time ago, but I’ve just seen these really pretty pictures of Li, which gave me the urge to find an excuse to post them 😉

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan would also be Jeon Ji-hyun’s next project following her vampire action movie Blood: The Last Vampire. The movie is based on American-Chinese writer Lisa See’s bestselling novel of the same name: A language kept a secret for a thousand years forms the backdrop for a story of two Chinese women whose friendship and love sustains them through their lives.

.

This absorbing novel takes place in 19th century China when girls had their feet bound, then spent the rest of their lives in seclusion with only a single window from which to see.  Illiterate and isolated, they were not expected to think, be creative, or have emotions. But in one remote county, women developed their own secret code, nu shu(女书)– “women’s writing” – the only gender-based written language to have been found in the world.  Some girls were paired as “old-sames”(老同)in emotional matches that lasted throughout their lives.  They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories, thereby reaching out of their windows to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

An old woman tells of her relationship with her “old-same,” their arranged marriages, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood—until a terrible misunderstanding written on their secret fan threatens to tear them apart. With the detail and emotional resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha , Snow Flower and the Secret Fan delves into one of the most mysterious and treasured relationships of all time—female friendship.

To most, Li might be an unfamiliar name as opposed to Zhang Ziyi, but she actually has had a prolific career, with many well-received and critically acclaimed works. In 2006, she starred opposite Chen Kun in movie The Knot (云水谣), which won her Best Actress at China’s Huabiao Awards. She also acted alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li in The Forbidden Kingdom (功夫之王) in 2008, the first film to feature two of the best-known names in the martial arts film genre. More recently in 2009, she bagged the prestigious Best Actress Award for her role in The Message (风声), which also starred Zhou Xun, Zhang Hanyu and Huang Xiaoming, at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards.

The movie adaptation of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan will track the story of Lily and Snow Flower from the age of 17, and will shoot the story of two pairs of friends belonging to two different time frames; it breaks up Lily and Snow Flower’s roles into 4 female characters spanning 2 different time zones. (Yeah this confuses me too!) Hence Jeon and Li may each take on dual roles. Hugh Jackman (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) has apparently been cast as the male lead.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is scheduled to wrap in May.
