Rest In Peace, Park Yong Ha

This is too shocking to handle.  Park Yong Ha, the hallyu actor of Winter Sonata and On Air fame, was discovered dead at his home on the morning of June 30. News of his presumed suicide have shaken the Korea entertainment industry and most of his colleagues, especially his past co-stars, find the news difficult to accept.

Park  has recently been cast alongside Yoon Eun Hye in the high-profile drama series Love Song, the remake of the Hong Kong romance film Tian Mi Mi, and was scheduled to begin filming in August. He has also been enjoying considerable popularity with his singing career in Japan, aided by the success of his drama works. Even though he has his share of family problems (his ailing father who’s suffering from stomach cancer), it’s really hard to understand that he would choose to end his life at this point.

Park’s Story of a Man co-star Park Shi Yeon (currently starring in Coffee House) spoke with him on the phone yesterday, but thought he sounded normal. She is reportedly so shocked and stricken with grief by the news of his suicide that there’s concern she won’t be able to continue filming.

In his past interviews, Park had said that he battled depression, which was exacerbated by prolonged promotional activities abroad. He had also admitted to suffering from insomnia for the last ten years due to his sensitive nature. Park is the 10th Korean celebrity to commit suicide in close to 2 years, since Choi Jin Shil’s death in October 2008. It’s really saddening, and clearly traumatizing as well, to see this horrible trend going on in the Korea showbiz. Park Yong Ha has been one of my favourite male stars since Winter Sonata and it really pains me to think that beneath his onscreen persona, he has actually been so depressed to the extent of taking his own life.

RIP, Park Yong Ha.
